I’m looking forward to this purely due to the fact that it is the new film from writer/director/actor/catering supervisor Shane Carruth who made the 2004 sci-fi riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma Primer.
There’s a very shonky review by me lurking on the internet that praises the opaque nature of Primer’s plot and its utter lack of spoon-feeding information to the audience. In fact Primer is so complex, that even the diagrams that have been constructed to explain it don’t really make a lot of sense. The scene in Looper where Bruce Willis declines a discussion about time travel citing the models that will need to be built with straws seems directly inspired by this.
On the basis of the teasers and trailers released so far for Upstream Color, it looks like it isn’t going to be an easy or accessible film – even the plot outline on IMDB sounds properly confusing, high concept it ain’t. Hopefully this means it will encourage as much debate and theorising as its much lauded predecessor.
